Glacier Travel & Crevasse Rescue Course

Skiing on a glacier can be a stunning experience, but there are hidden hazards that need to be recognized and managed accordingly. There are many rewarding tours and objectives involving glacier travel in the mountains of western Canada.

In our 2 day course, we offer a mix of classroom theory, then progress to hands on work with software and hardware – knots, harness’, carabiners, etc in a controlled dryland setting. Students practice these systems, and learn to self rescue in a crevasse fall simulation by climbing the rope with a variety of techniques. Then we move to the mountains, and practice “real” crevasse rescue, again in controlled simulated scenarios, where students learn and employ various hauling techniques to pull a companion from a crevasse. We use the local backcountry on Hudson Bay Mountain to simulate Glacier Travel – this is cost effective, and maximizes the students time learning.

Depending on the weather and the group, for an additional cost, we have flown to/from a local glacier for some real training on an active glacier.
